You don’t always need a full net session to improve your batting. Consistency is key! Here are three simple drills you can practice in your garden or a open space to build muscle memory, improve your footwork, and become a more confident batsman.
The Shadow Driving Drill
Goal:
To perfect your batting stance and shot technique without a ball.
How:
Take your guard and go through the full, slow-motion motion of your favorite drives—the straight drive, cover drive, and on-drive. Focus on getting your head over the ball, your front foot to the pitch of the “imaginary” ball, and a high elbow. This builds clean technique.
The Cone Footwork Drill
Goal:
To improve agility and movement on the crease.
How:
Place two cones (or any markers) a few feet apart, representing off-stump and leg-stump. Have a partner (or just yourself) call out “forward” or “back.” Move swiftly to the appropriate cone, getting into a balanced batting position as if you’re playing a shot. This sharpens your reaction time and footwork.
The Tennis Ball Throwdown
Goal:
To improve hand-eye coordination and shot timing.
How:
Using a tennis ball and a bat, have a partner throw underarm balls at you from about 10-15 yards away. The softer, bouncier tennis ball forces you to watch the ball closely and play with soft hands. It’s excellent for practicing both defensive blocks and aggressive shots like cuts and pulls safely.
Great batters are made through repetition. By adding these short, focused drills to your routine, you’ll see a real difference in your coordination and confidence at the crease. Need a new bat or some practice balls? Check out our range of cricket gear to support your training
